Never shy when it comes to testing out new formats in the game, the DP World Tour and Ladies European Tour (LET) took a step into the unknown in 2021 with the ‘Scandinavian Mixed’. Such was the response to the event that we’re back for a third renewal this year with a $2m prize fund and Volvo once again as the title sponsors.

Following Henrik Stenson’s move to LIV, Annika Sorenstam is left as the sole host for this year’s renewal, however she’s done a great job of assembling this field of 78 men and 78 women with local favourites Alex Noren and Linn Grant headlining.

The format is fairly straightforward, despite its mixed gender nature. Both the men and the women will play the same course at the same time to the same pins, with the only difference being that different tees are used to accommodate the fact that men (generally) hit the ball further.

Defending Champion Linn Grant is the 16/1 favourite this week, having picked up her fifth LET title a little under a month ago at the Jabra Ladies Open in France. Alex Noren follows in the betting alongside Alexander Bjork and Robert MacIntyre, with the trio all rating at 20/1 or shorter at the time of writing.

Get up to 12 places each way at the Volvo Mixed with bet365’s ‘Each Way Extra’ promotion on golf.

Course Overview. To add to the intrigue this week, we’re moving to yet another venue for this event, this time to Ullna Golf & Country Club which sits to the north of the Swedish capital Stockholm.

Listed as a 6,819 yard par 72 for the men and presumably a little shorter for the women, although yardages haven’t been confirmed at the time of writing, the Sven Tumba design – which received a Jack Nicklaus makeover in 2013 – is an exposed course with water heavily in play throughout.

Similar to the tests that have hosted this event in the two renewals to date, strategic placement from off the tee is likely to be the key here rather than flagrant bombing given the penalty for inaccuracy, however the putting surfaces are relatively speedy, bentgrass-based affairs that will undoubtedly reap birdies to those who can find the putting surfaces in regulation.

Although new to the DP World Tour, the course hosted the 2004 HP Open on the LET which was won by our host Annika Sorenstam, who closed with a 64 for a 13-under total.

Tournament Stats. We’ve published some key player statistics for this week’s event. Current form stats feature both men’s and women’s results from their respective Tours, and the combined stats include the last two years’ worth of results, however as noted the venue has changed again this year: Current Form | First Round Leader Stats | Event Stats | Combined Stats.

Event Winners. 2022, Linn Grant, 28/1; 2021, Jonathan Caldwell, 150/1

Weather Forecast. The latest weather forecast for Stockholm is here.

Dry and sunny conditions as Sweden enters the early part of summer, with temperatures reaching 70 Fahrenheit by Sunday. Winds will be generally light at 5-10mph, with the odd gust maybe a little stronger than that.

Tournament Trends & Key Factors. With only two editions of the Scandinavian Mixed to go on, both of which were played on different courses, this week is still a guessing game to a large degree.

Historically these attempts to mix the men’s and women’s game have resulted in a male-heavy leaderboard, however it would appear that organisers got the format just about right in 2021 with 2 men and 2 women sharing the lead heading into the final day. In the end, Jonathan Caldwell grabbed his first win outside of the EuroPro Tour, holding off Adrian Otaegui by a stroke with Alice Hewson a shot further back. You had to venture into a tie for 10th for the next LET player to appear, however given that the 54-hole leaderboard was more even, that may well be down to the variance of Sunday finishes rather than any gender bias.

Last year’s win for Linn Grant – by a runaway 9 strokes in the end – further reinforces this point, although you have to head all the way down to 15th place to find the next LET player so caution still needs to be advised.

Field skill stats and Strokes Gained numbers exist for the whole field from both renewals, however given we’re on an entirely new track that’s largely irrelevant in my view, so judging the course here in Stockholm on its specification is the preferred route for me.

Incoming Form. The recent form of our two event winners to date was very different, which goes some way to explaining the odds differential between Linn Grant last year (28/1 best price) versus the 150/1 available about Jonathan Caldwell the year before:

  • 2022, Linn Grant: 57/65/MC/23/18/2/2/1/7/7/13/1
  • 2021, Jonathan Caldwell: MC/MC/MC/MC/57/MC/21/42/MC/65/31/MC

Grant was undeniably in great form heading into this event 12 months ago, arriving off the back of her second win of the season at the Belgian Ladies Open a fortnight before which backed up her success in Joburg in March.

Caldwell, on the other hand, had a season’s best finish of 21st in Gran Canaria 6 weeks before and had missed the cut in Germany on his last start, however there were a few signs of life with rounds of 65 & 67 (twice) on his previous two starts to suggest that his game wasn’t a million miles away – if you can ignore the poor rounds that flanked those efforts of course.

Boiling it all down, a relatively placid forecast on a short test with water heavily in play should encourage slightly deeper scoring than we saw last week in Germany, and those who can master the strategic demands of this course may well succeed.

My selections are as follows:

Linn Grant 3pts EW 16/1 (8EW, 1/5*) with bet365

Alex Noren returns home this week to support the Scandinavian Mixed, as he did last year when finishing 15th, however the bookies are struggling to split the home favourite from the in-form Alexander Bjork and defending champion Linn Grant.

So emphatic was her victory in this event last year, Grant’s marginal favouritism for this week at the time of writing is neither a surprise nor unexpected – in fact, if anything I suspect there should be clear daylight between her and the rest of the field at the top of the market.

The 23 year-old’s incoming form last year was clear for all to see: 2 wins and 2 runner-up finishes in her previous 7 starts meant that she was positioned high on the betting boards 12 months ago, which was ultimately enough to put me off; a nine-stroke victory though, which she converted with consummate ease, tells me not to make the same mistake again and I’m happy to support a successful defence here this week.

Undoubtedly the media commitments will be greater for Linn this week: alongside Alex Noren she’s the headline act, however with 10 professional wins in her short career to date, she’s getting used to the attention and quite rightly so.

Since her win at Halmstad GC last year, the Swede has gone on to win two further LET titles, most recently at the Jabra Ladies Open a little under a month ago. The odd excursion onto the LPGA has shown promise too, with 8th at the BMW Ladies Championship last October, 14th at the HSBC Women’s Championship in March, and most recently 3rd on her last start at the Bank of Hope Matchplay the week before last.

Accurate enough for her length off the tee means that Linn often ranks in the upper echelons of the Total Driving statistic, a facet of the game which will open up scoring opportunities for her this week whilst also helping her keep out of the worst of the trouble – a combination which could prove to be potent as she looks to prove that last year’s victory wasn’t a flash in the pan at this level. Jazz Janewattananond 1pt EW 70/1 (8EW, 1/5*) with bet365

Some indifferent form of late has seen talented Thai Jazz Janewattananond drift down the betting market at quite a pace; however I think that this Ullna setup will suit him perfectly.

As recently as March into April we saw the 27 year-old record successive finishes of 6th, 6th, 4th and then 9th at Asian Tour and then finally DP World Tour level, and although much of his best work has been achieved outside of Europe – 7 Asian Tour wins is testament to that – he does have enough previous in and around the mainland to encourage support.

6th on Swedish soil at the Nordea Masters behind Paul Waring back in 2018, Jazz finished 3rd to John Catlin at the Galgorm Castle-hosted Irish Open back in 2020 which is another track that demands strategy over brute force, and his accurate game should suit this week’s test nicely, sitting as he does at 16th for Driving Accuracy for the 2023 season to date.

20th in this event last year is a solid foundation for this week’s format and if we can overlook last week’s missed cut on a lengthy course that punished many players, then his effort the week before in Holland where he finished 21st, ranking 3rd for Driving Accuracy and 2nd for GIR into the bargain, suggests that his game hasn’t dropped as far off a cliff as his price might suggest. Lily May Humphreys 1pt EW 140/1 (8EW, 1/5*) with bet365

If accuracy is going to be key this week, then siding with the player who tops the LET driving accuracy stat for the season to date seems like a sensible plan.

Averaging just shy of 90% of fairways hit for 2023 thus far, Lily May Humphreys has the discipline to stay patient when her more aggressive peers take chances which may prove to be unnecessarily risky around this water-laden track. “Today was simple golf, I stuck to the same game plan,” she said after winning her maiden LET title in Johannesburg in March, “I wasn’t as aggressive as other people on a few holes, it was what I felt comfortable with and what I felt was best for me and it obviously paid off for me this week. I stuck to my game plan and tried to play my best golf.

So a strategic mindset and a win to her name already tucked away – the same Joburg Ladies Open title and venue that Linn Grant triumphed at prior to her win in this event 12 months ago – the 21 year-old would seem to be a good fit for this week’s task and she arrives here in progressive form once again.

24th, 12th and 6th over her last three starts has seen a typically metronomic series of figures from her long game, topping the field for Driving Accuracy and ranking 3rd for GIR last week as she recorded a big personal best on Swedish soil.

The Chelmsford star has a whole host of junior titles to her name, including the Annika Invitational Europe which is another event supported by this week’s host, and I can see her in the mix here as she looks to follow that win up on the professional ranks. RESULT: MC

James Morrison 1pt EW 175/1 (6EW, 1/5) with William Hill

Finally, I’ll take a chance on James Morrison who will be looking, as ever, to join the long list of players who’ve broken a lengthy victory drought in the recent past.

The Englishman is winless now since the 2015 Spanish Open where he held off the likes of Francesco Molinari and Miguel Angel Jimenez by 4 strokes, and a cursory glance at the Driving Distance stats gives us a good indication as to why. In a world where length off the tee trumps many other facets of the game most weeks, averaging just 284 yards from off the tee and languishing 158th out of 163 players for 2023 just isn’t going to cut it most weeks.

When the 38 year-old has played well in the recent past though it’s of no surprise to find that the dimensions of the course were far more amenable which makes him a play this week. 4th at the 2019 KLM Open, hosted at the sub-7,000 yard ‘The International’ is a case in point, as is 4th at this event in 2021 at the 7,060 yard par 72 that hosted that year in Gothenburg. 4th at Valderrama later that year is further evidence that he can handle a short track where accuracy is paramount, and most recently a 7th place finish last month at the 6,940 yard Rinkven International, which hosted the Soudal Open, reinforces my point.

Of course the Chertsey man doesn’t automatically play well by default when the course appears to suit, however at a healthy 3-figure price I’m happy to take a chance that he takes a liking to this track on debut. Aside from the aforementioned 4th place finish in this event 2 years ago, Morrison also finished 8th at the Scandinavian Masters back in 2010 – topping Driving Accuracy on the way – and his precise game could see him sneak us an each way place come Sunday evening.
